Can there really be any such thing as someone who is 'telepathic'? Most people would probably answer 'only in some fantasy novel.' But, look at all the things that people do today that once upon a time would have been 'mere fantasy': flying through the air; using the Internet to talk instantly to people thousands or millions of miles away; putting entire books on a hand-held device without needing any paper; and on and on.

As Arthur C. Clarke once said 'Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic'. It is certainly true that technology has advanced almost beyond what we could have imagined even fifty years ago. Using technology which is out of date by today's standards we have walked on the moon, visited the bottom of the ocean and created communication technologies which work without wires ? it most certainly would appear to someone living a century ago that ours is a world filled with magic and unexplainable phenomena.

To the people living a century ago, all these things would have been considered impossible. But we know that they do exist. This begs the question: Is it not possible that telepathic people are merely operating in a way that science does not yet understand? But by much telepathy is still viewed as nothing more than magic.

The fields of paraphysics and parapsychology study (among other things) telepathic communication. Experiments are conducted in a scientific manner into the phenomenon of telepathy, with new data coming to light all of the time.

Oftentimes the results of the experiments are very intriguing. For something like telepathy to be considered by the science world to be a scientific fact it has to be possible to measure it, the results must be consistent, and the results must be repeatable. However, when it comes to telepathy the results are not always repeatable or consistent. While science then declares telepathy as improvable of unsubstantiated, others point out that perhaps they just haven?t invented the proper tests yet, since we still do not know or understand why some people are telepathic.

But there are some important questions about telepathy that need to be answered. For one, how can people possibly transmit communications with pure thought, with no involvement of the five physical senses? But once again, existing technology gives us the answer. If you have a radio receiver in your home or office, you can listen to a vast array of different programs, ideas, music, and voices all with the touch of buttons or the flip of a dial…but, have you ever seen a radio wave pulsing through the air? Why can't there be 'telepathy waves' that also propagate invisibly and undetected by the five senses? Ah, you say, because the human brain is not a radio tower!

..Or, is it? Electrical and magnetic fields generated by the brain have been scientifically proven to exist-and they are called 'thought waves'. MRI technology and a lot of neuroscience investigations depend on these thought waves. To put it simply, this is the key that should open up the door on telepathy.

Scientifically speaking, our thoughts occur as the result of biochemical processes which involve electrical impulses being transferred from neuron to neuron in the brain. These electrical impulses are very small, but they are measureable ? and of course, any electrical current will generate a magnetic field. In the human brain, there are thousands of these electrical impulses happening at any given time.

The question which research into telepathy seeks to answer is if these bio-electric and bio-magnetic fields can be used as a medium of communication. Is it possible to convey information in these impulses and if so, can the ability to communicate this way be learned through training? Can meditation and controlled thought exercises be useful in learning to make one?s brainwaves into a viable means of communication?

The electrical and magnetic fields produced by our brains are small and can be easily drowned out by the electro magnetic fields produced by all our stereos, televisions, microwaves, computers, fridges, etc that surround us.

Some research has been done into how to increase the power of these signals ? it is known that when people are in a heightened emotional state (usually fear, pain or surprise) there is an increased amount of synaptic activity, leading to stronger brainwaves.

When a mother who is far away from her child suddenly knows that her child is in danger, her synapses are firing more neurons simultaneously and parapsychologists have been able to document these brief instances of telepathy. This raises the question then that if we detect a spike in bio-electrical and bio-magnetic brainwaves, does that mean that there is a link between that and telepathic communication?

At this moment, parapsychologists and paraphysicists have not yet learned enough about telepathic communication to positively verify that telepathy is a real phenomenon, at least as far as the mainstream scientific community is concerned. However, the evidence is mounting up and research is continuing, with many already convinced that with the right training, anyone can develop and use their natural telepathic communication abilities.
